The Volkswagen means 'people's car in German which also belongs in the history of the company which is tied with Adolf Hitler. The first logo was designed by Franz Xavier Reimspiess. Ive noticed that the main part of the logo hasn't changed much, but after WWII they designed around a circle which seems to be inspired from the Nazi flag. The colours were added in 2000, blue/sliver into glow, more 3D style.
